For Italian wine lovers, this debut release of Sagrantino by Muscardini Cellars is really something special. Sagrantino is widely planted in the Montefalco region of Umbria in central Italy but it is very rare to find this red grape variety grown in the United States. As an exciting exception to that rule, this flavorful offering is made with fruit from the June Mountain Vineyards, which is part of the rugged, high-elevation Fountain Grove appellation, located in the Mayacamas Range in the eastern segment of Sonoma County. With a deep, dark red color and sultry aromas of dark fruits, ripe red apple skin, fresh herbs, raw tobacco, savory spices and roasted walnuts, this wine commands attention the moment it hits the glass. On the palate, the nuances expand with rich and complex flavors of briary blackberries, dark plum, cherry cola, licorice, wild sage, black pepper, bright acidity, and a memorable hint of dark chocolate truffle leading to a lingering finish. A true gem with an Italian twist.
Food Pairings: Gorgonzola cheese, fresh pasta with rich tomato sauce, spicy sausage, juicy steaks, baby back ribs, gamey meats, bittersweet chocolate desserts, and cigars by the fireplace.
